I will be presenting a paper titled ‘Feeding the African city: The role of female food vendors in reproducing urban labour in Kumasi and Dar es Salaam’ coauthored with Dr Philipa Birago Akuoko. This paper will be presented as part of ‘Labour behind the scenes of city spaces and urban infrastructures’ session.
I will deliver a poster presentation at this workshop which presents a new approach to theorising urban economic informality in contexts of increasingly severe climate change. I term this new approach the ‘Feminist Urban Informal-Ecological Framework’. This framework specifically focuses on the nexus of the informal and the ecological in urban contexts.
Panel 23 - Informal Economies in an Age of Environmental Crisis (Session 1)
In this presentation, I’ll interrogate how informal livelihoods are governed in the context of worsening climate change. I seek to identify gaps in discourses on climate change policy and governance of informal economic actors with a focus on street vendors and market traders in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania (Dar).
